This is a common statement usually by Americans with a limited grasp of European politics. The fact is that Europe is not one entity. It is a lot of countries with a very wide spectrum of political views. Democrats would be considered very left-wing in some countries e.g. Hungary and centrist in others e.g. Denmark. But it is definitely not "very right-wing" by any countries standard.
