If you're coding only for the paycheck, you're in it for the wrong reasons
- alex_lav 3y agoSuch a silly idea.
- the_only_law 3y agoYeah because I love shitty web apps, mindless consumerism with intrusive ads, and bureaucracy as a service. Don’t forget increasingly ridiculous tooling to keep up with trends, mindless abstraction piling, and cargo culting. Fun stuff!
- yosito 3y agoIt's a pretty privileged mindset to have the luxury to code only for the "right reasons". If you're an employee or a contractor, rather than a business owner or a hobbyist, it's almost a guarantee that you're doing it for at least some "wrong reasons".
- lopkeny12ko 3y agoWhat is your basis for stating that the author is coming from a place of privilege? Do you truly believe a Nigerian developer who makes a salary 1-2 orders of magnitude less than yours codes out of passion rather than a paycheck because of privilege? Check your own biases before slandering others.
- catchnear4321 3y agoplease do click through to his profile so that you can see “thank you html” with the author sitting on a supercar.
- yosito 3y agoStating my opinion about the author's opinion isn't slander. Take it easy. And there's no reason to compare the author and me. We're talking about the opinion here, not about who holds it.
- throwawaysleep 3y agoI don't give a damn about innovation. I like having a large house with tasty expensive food, nice vacations, and a fat investment account. And I bet if this job paid 50K a year, OP wouldn't be doing it either.
- fithisux 3y ago"If you're coding only for the paycheck, you're in it for the wrong reasons" I think the paycheck is not that much for getting behavior control as a bonus. In other words, mind your own business.
- senttoschool 3y agoWho cares if you're putting food on the table for your family?
- wryoak 3y agoAgreed. That’s why I’m trying to get out of it. Problem is I have no other skills.
- WheelsAtLarge 3y agoBS, while it's nice and a great benefit to code for joy, the fact is that coding is a job for most people. It pays the bills. Most people in society do work as a way to satisfy other needs. Coding is no different. If it's your passion that's great. If you are doing it to pay the bills that's great too. Don't get suckered in to thinking that you have to have a great passion for it. It pays well and you do it in a very nice environment. Additionally, the paycheck gives you the added freedom to search for your passion if coding is not it. That should be enough.
