The Evisceration of a Public University
- nocoiner 3y agoI’m a huge fan of the traditional liberal arts education. I recognize that it is not necessarily a direct pipeline to the needs of a modern, post-industrial economy, but the depth and breadth of the topics that I was able to study during my fairly unstructured liberal arts undergrad degree gave me a terrifically useful toolkit for assessing and analyzing the world. If nothing else, I’m fairly good at knowing what I don’t know, and hey - that’s half the battle sometimes. It pains me to see world languages being completely culled. I readily grant that a German or French major is probably not terribly useful in these days of machine translation and English basically occupying lingua franca status, but learning another language truly does teach new modes of thought. It sucks immensely that universities are larding up on administrations and cutting programs like this which, impractical or non-commerical they may be, are pretty much the reason for the existence of universities! In conclusion, I blame Margaret Thatcher.
