I disagree with the equivalence between "you don't want any manager" and "you want to hide your work". I don't want to hide my work, I just think the reason most of our managers are non-managers is because the team can manage itself. We can produce the same reports the manager can, after all we tell him what to put in them. The manager is often an unnecessary layer.
