If VR manages to achieve critical mass, it will become the new social media.
People use social media (YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, etc) to connect with others, and VR offers a whole new level of connection. I think that is why Meta (Facebook) is investing so much into the metaverse. (Some argue they are making the wrong type of investments[0], though...)
A few years ago I participated in a "VR Challenge,"[1] and that was my big takeaway. Dylan Watkins made some compelling arguments. (Take it with a grain of salt, since he sells VR training.)
I think VR could become a new platform in the same way PC's were usurped by the web was usurped by mobile apps.
Many mobile apps/web sites/programs will be ported to VR when it hits critical mass. There will be some truly transformational ports that exercise the full power of VR, while others will just be a webview in VR. The other platforms will continue to exist, just the way PC's and web sites still exist in the age of mobile apps. (And we'll find out some apps just aren't suited for VR.)
