Hawaii governor says state is looking to 'acquire land' destroyed in fires

- SirMaster 3y agoSo will archive.org delete them too?
- kitanata 3y ago[flagged]
- shagie 3y agoNeither the GDPR nor CCPA have a "right to erasure" or require deleting everything. They require deleting personally identifying information - not everything falls into that category. For example, this comment does not have any PII in it that would qualify under either of those laws and so asking HN to delete it under either would likely be futile. If you have a different opinion on this, could you cite the part of the CCPA or GDPR that suggests that every comment should be deleted?

- dmbche 3y ago"He vowed to prevent foreign buyers from swooping in to exploit the tragedy, suggesting the state was better suited to take control of the land. "I'm already thinking of ways for the state to acquire that land so that we can put it into workforce housing, to put it back into families, or make it open spaces in perpetuity as a memorial to the people who were lost," Green said while standing amongst the rubble."
- golergka 3y agoSounds like he wants to prevent land owners who suffered from this disaster from getting fair market price for their property and exploit them himself? If state really wanted to pay fair price, it wouldn't have to prevent other buyers. It would just out-bid them.
- dmbche 3y ago....maybe Hawaii isn't in the best place to negotiate fairly because they just suffered wildfires and are trying to make sure the land doesn't get sold for nothing by the locals who lost everything? This is the reason there is regulation and not just the invsible hand
- onlyrealcuzzo 3y agoFunny that the visible hand only works to benefit home owners / sellers and never works against them. There's a group of people on the opposite end of the trade perpetually getting shafted.
- dmbche 3y agoReal estate moguls are getting shafted?
- onlyrealcuzzo 3y agoReal estate moguls are generally home owners...

- Eumenes 3y agoCan you point to something in the article that is false or a conspiracy? Your bias and lack of maturity is showing and it goes against the spirit of HN.
- nyanmatt 3y agoThe community decides what appears on this site. What is your basis for censoring things that you find personally objectionable?
- pizza 3y agoI think your first sentence directly answers your second one.
- paul7986 3y agoThe community decided that both these stories that were rising in popularity are quickly removed and flagged? https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=37146373 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=37146373 Hmmm
- MichaelZuo 3y agoThe community also includes moderators such as Dang, as well as various automated systems that act on behalf of the encoded norms. This is a fairly well known aspect of HN?
- paul7986 3y agohmm ok im familiar with Dang and for a bit there I thought maybe these sites where these stories are ... are conspiracy theorist sites. Though here is the same story on ABC's Good Morning America in which the Govenor of Hawaii is addressing and speaking on the issue. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CsvAf-1rsI4&t=32s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CsvAf-1rsI4&t=32s Though Maybe it's just not a Hacker News topic but it should be as it's interesting and it needs to be spread for the sake of those poor people who just lost everything!
- phero_cnstrcts 3y agoConvenient.
- elpakal 3y agoSo if my house burned down (it didn't I'm just trying to understand) do I not still own the lot beneath the rubble?
- onlyrealcuzzo 3y agoIt depends. In Hawaii, a lot of the the land is not owned fee simple. ~60% of houses are owned by the banks.
- Eumenes 3y ago"Oh, and btw - BlackRock will help underwrite and manage the land acquisition - no more comments please!"
- terran57 3y agoPardon the slight (irrelevant) quibble - but land hasn't been "destroyed" - only the "improvements" made to the land have been.
- paul7986 3y agoHere's a similar story and thread that was posted here on HN yet it was flagged (how come)? https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=37146373 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=37146373
- justinzollars 3y agoA land grab after this tragedy is really not appropriate. These families should not lose their land to a criminal government, and should maintain ownership. Politicians are by class congenital, pathological, enthusiastic liars and they do not have the best interest of this land in mind.
- wonderwonder 3y ago"so you will be pretty poorly informed if you try to steal land from our people and then build here" Why insult people that are looking to purchase land on the island? Last time I checked Hawaii was part of America, they are not different people. Plus it sounds like the state is just going to seize the land from the families that own it and dictate what can be done with it? This seems pretty suspect and very much a "lets change the law, remove people's rights so I can look like a hero in the moment to the voters that were not affected and damn the long term consequences and well being of those that currently own the land"
- Turing_Machine 3y ago> if you try to steal land from our people "That's our job."
- tmaly 3y agoI would like to see the land returned to the families if at all possible.

- Simulacra 3y agoHe just said ignore private land developers but the government might buy. Such a strange thing to say back to back. Something is fishy.
