Amid the ash of Lahaina, aid and anger are spreading
- ggm 3y agoThey're right to be angry, traditional owners and working class under insured residents will be poorly served. With the best will in the world the state doesn't know how to handle this situation "fairly" because it's so contextual what is Fair. Somebody who walks away may get nothing. Somebody who accepts enough grant and aide may do better to sell out unimproved cleared land to a millionaire. Somebody who is determined to stay may luck out for assistance, land value and insurance payout and have lost everything. Everyone in Lahaina has significant health risks ahead of them, fire leaves complex toxic waste behind including very possibly mobile burnt asbestos from older 1960s and before homes (it was used as a construction material well beyond knowledge of its risks) which will be fitfully cleared up. PM10 dust gets deep in the lungs, and lots of bad water soluble chemicals will be around.
