I can't speak for veracity of this article. I will comment on Microsoft part. My understanding is the MSFT does not get to see/modify any GPT-4 internals. OpenAI is treating them at the arms length, just as any other customer. I can not imagine Microsoft internal teams being happy about it. I (seriously) can not fathom that internal team are not building the replacement as we speak. So, yes, MSFT will buy them and ChatGPT itself is not in danger. But it could be possible that OpenAI is, in fact, close to bankruptcy and MSFT is not going to "bail" them out.
