This cites the "analytics India" article that was on here the other day and appeared to just be made up, and then includes some speculation. Is there anything remotely credible that supports this theory? Isn't one of their biggest (or their biggest) investor, Microsoft building hard on top of them? The idea seems ridiculous.
Edit: this article was discussed the other day (I think the other Analytics India one was killed) https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=37109394 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=37109394
- Bostonian 3y agoI agree -- many tech companies would be happy to buy OpenAI.
- prirun 3y agoOr maybe not, since they'd have Microsoft as a 50% investor.
- g42gregory 3y agoMicrosoft is 49% and they have no operational say.
- version_five 3y agoWhen you're a startup and Microsoft has a 49% multi-billion dollar investment in you, they have operational say. I understand what you mean, but in reality their opinion and continued approval will have a lot of weight, even for OpenAI.
- g42gregory 3y agoMakes sense.
- g42gregory 3y agoI can't speak for veracity of this article. I will comment on Microsoft part. My understanding is the MSFT does not get to see/modify any GPT-4 internals. OpenAI is treating them at the arms length, just as any other customer. I can not imagine Microsoft internal teams being happy about it. I (seriously) can not fathom that internal team are not building the replacement as we speak. So, yes, MSFT will buy them and ChatGPT itself is not in danger. But it could be possible that OpenAI is, in fact, close to bankruptcy and MSFT is not going to "bail" them out.
