Very relevant to my interests. My plan right now is when we send my teen off to college to build a house to passive house standards, and in the process wire it up to do all the smart home things in a locally controlled/non-cloud manner. Local cameras have been a thing forever, as is local access control and thermostats, but video doorbells surprisingly have primarily been cloud based in their history. I haven’t gone super deep into home assistant yet, but my plan is to use a mix of direct control and HomeKit commercial offerings.
