I can think of about five famous university presidents, and I'm not sure the innovations of any were that positive: Eliot and Conant at Harvard: Gilman at Johns Hopkins; Hutchins at Chicago; Kerr at California. In a purely economic view, the publicity garnered by a couple of them was a gain for their schools, I guess.
