US picks the first two sites for carbon-capture hubs
- Terr_ 3y ago> the CO2 they capture won't be used for extracting fossil fuels This is important because those attempts are something of a farce designed to qualify for super-ironic tax-credits: They're often using CO2 that was already underground rather than pulling it from the atmosphere which is where we have the problematic surplus. Then they're maybe-kinda re-burying it by using it to pressurize other wells and push oil around, or "Enhanced Oil Recovery." https://www.iea.org/commentaries/can-co2-eor-really-provide-carbon-negative-oil https://www.iea.org/commentaries/can-co2-eor-really-provide-...
- Yizahi 3y agoI would consider this a first real step towards combating climate change, even tiny like this one, because everything else humans are doing is more of a greenwashing and corporate blame shifting, completely invisible in the resulting graphs over past years (temps and co2 levels). So to me it is the only viable path to do anything really (alternatives are a) sunshield, for which we don't have any requirement technologies, or b) seeding atmosphere with sulfur compounds, which we maybe can do, but with uncertain modelling today). Surprisingly, the comments on ArsTechnica are overwhelmingly negative, so I wonder, what do you think about this initiative?
