I blame the easy availability of additional resources in the cloud for a lot of problems here. Prod db slow? Get a bigger EC2 instance. Still slow? Hmm, maybe bigger again! Why bother tuning. Now... Who knows why our AWS bill is so high? With real hardware in a DC, you'd have to justify large capital expenditures to do something that stupid.
