Turns out nobody cared about panel gaps
- tiernano 3y ago> Consumers voted with their wallets for poorly built EVs because well-built gas-powered cars were deemed irrelevant in comparison. but now they have to compete with companies who do both: BMW, Mercedes Benz, Audi, Porsche... for around the same price as a Tesla Model S, you could get all (except maybe the Porsche) and built by someone who cares about quality, not to mention CarPlay...
- alpaca128 3y agoPeople care about not having to worry about where and when they have to recharge the battery. Tesla handles that route planning automatically and provides a reliable charger network. As long as BMW, Porsche etc don't do that they can't compete imho. They're not any better in that regard than a cheaper choice like the Nissan Leaf. The best build quality doesn't help when the hotel's charger won't work because the QR code on the sign degraded to a point it can't be scanned anymore. Or chargers that just don't do anything, or can't be used because the control panel's display cover isn't UV resistant and was blasted by the sun until the UI turned invisible. All real examples, by the way. The difference in the user experience is staggering.
- 2rsf 3y agoDefinitely at the beginning, but this is no longer the case in many parts of the world where charger coverage grew widely, newer cars are adopting Tesla's NACS as charging ports and Tesla opening their network to others. An anecdotal example from Sweden- there are no Tesla chargers available closeby for people in the big Stockholm metropolitan area.
- tiernano 3y agoin reality, this is something that is going to get better over time... plus, if Tesla has a major issue in their main DC and the chargers cant talk back to it, no one with a tesla can charge... But a BMW can use one of the multiple other chargers available. I was in a services station on a busy motorway here in Ireland (M11 between Dublin and Wexford) and there where ESB e-car chargers (main power company here) and Ionity... but not Tesla. Tesla do have chargers here, just not that many.
