Speakers ?
Maybe.
Microphone?
Maybe.
Webcam?
Maybe.
TouchID?
Maybe.
Display on latest M2s?
Maybe.
The list goes on and they still say things will be ready by next month on M1 and M2.
Don't get me wrong, I'm supporting the effort through donations but why do open source developers running on best effort development need to set toxic deadlines and expectations upon themselves?
A simple "it will be ready when it's ready" would do. Now they are under pressure because of this fabricated "in one month" time limit. Good software is rarely built under pressure, so just take your time and do things properly please.
- ngcc_hk 3y agoThe article said something quite alarming … not working is different from software controlled killing speaker etc. I think the priority is “safety” to hardware so we can try it. And if it can run under vm even better. We agree we need to help to test. Linux desktop is hard because there is no easy way to globally test it (and the Microsoft past is just dump it to you and you sort it out as well. But they have decades and captured users …)
- rowanG077 3y agoThis is kind of the feeling I have gotten. I have donated for almost a year in the early days. But the more basic things don't seem to get attention. I understand a lot of dev time is focused on the gpu. But I would rather they get the current gl version stable and then park that for the other stuff. Sure vulkan is nice. But it's much nicer that I can connect a screen or do a zoom meeting. I get it though. Gpu is probably the most technically challenging and fun part to work on. And they are almost all volunteers so it's very understandable.
- paddim8 3y agoVulkan is being worked on because someone with the relevant skills felt like working on that. Doesn't necessarily take away time from other parts of the project.
- rowanG077 3y agoOne of their core members. Lina. Is working a lot on the gpu driver to support vulkan and newer openGL features. But she also has worked on other things. Sure alyssa for example is laser focused on mesa. But there is definitely some people who could have been working on something else rather then GPU. So in general you are right. Not everyone can work on everything. But with the GPU that's simple not the case here. I mean you can also easily tell with the velocity of the features that are released. Prior to the GPU being a hyper focus every few months large parts of new hardware was supported. Which is now almost at a standstill. You have holdouts like eiln which worked on ANE and now the webcam though.
