With the Ubuntu snap debacle and active war by Ubuntu on things like Mint that are snapless Ubuntu, is Fedora the new desktop direction?
I'm still on tons of ubuntu and derivatives out of basically inertia, most of them are on the boundaries of snap vs non-snap, but the direction of ubuntu is clear: bad / dangerous snaps that IMO aren't real unix.
I'm deciding on doing everything with Mint going forward, or making the Fedora / dnf switch.
Snaps might be good for server, but for desktop they break so much stuff, because desktop apps need filesystem access that philosphically ubuntu isn't going to do.
For example, if I have a raid array that has big media files or other large files, and I want to load from there with a snap-based desktop snap app, it can't see them. Unless they are in the home directory.
Linked dirs won't work. The solution from ubuntu? Some hack entry in /etc/fstab.
When I save things in snap'd firefox, it dumps me first into some weird path inside the snap. The handoff from the firefox to the file selection is broken with no autofocus. And a half-dozen other GUI issues.
It just sucks. Desktop linux keeps getting close and then doing crap like this. GNOME full rewrites. KDE full rewrites. Wayland full rewrites.
So anyway, maybe Fedora with Mac will take some fundamental lead. We need a "winner" other than Ubuntu.

It's rolling but tested and stable so there's a lot or continuity to the development and the UX, so you never feel like you get the rug pulled from under you suddenly after an update.
