I’m inclined to agree. But to play the devils advocate:
- Some long range ferries are already running on hydrogen. I’m not sure how much hydrogen will be used in ships in general, but for medium range it seems that hydrogen could be a good fit.
- There’s a reason why certain trains don’t already use overhead lines. Though maybe you’re still right about the 5% number.. what share are diesel now?
- Long haul trucks might still be an area where hydrogen could be popular.
I’m very skeptical about hydrogen for planes though. People forget that the volumetric density is kinda bad, and you have less flexibility in designing the tanks into the plane. With fuel you can use the wings as tanks. With batteries they could potentially be structural and can fit in many places. With hydrogen it seems they kinda just need to stick a couple of big cylindrical tanks wherever they can find place for them.
- _hypx 3y agoThere are only two answers for planes: Hydrogen or synthetic fuels. That is because weight is the overwhelming critical factor for planes. And batteries are about 100x too heavy for this purpose. No amount of handwaving can get around that part. People really need to stop suggesting battery powered planes. They are merely revealing their total lack of basic understanding of this subject.
