The Midwest is America's robot capital
- rmason 3y agoI remember some time ago when drones were new that the city fathers of Detroit (I do not know whom) desired that the city become the drone capital of the world. They made space available at the old City Airport and the company's flocked there due to the cheap rent and largely unused runways. I went to some of their demo nights one summer. One of the investors gave rides in his GT-40. The companies were doing some innovative stuff for the time. I went despite knowing as a native Detroiter that the airport was in one of the single worst neighborhoods in the city. Not a place you ever wanted to be after dark. Course none of us could know at the time that China would dominate in the drone market. The Chinese started at the low end (just like the Japanese did in the seventies with autos) and proceeded to move up market crushing everything in their way. Now I have to wonder if the same thing will happen all over again with robots? Or perhaps Detroit is missing a bet by not creating a hub for all the robot companies?
