Hrm. Just going to keep sticking with Debian and Ubuntu like I've been doing since ... wow, 1997.
- BossingAround 3y agoFor personal and small business needs, you can stick to whatever you'd like, even Arch Linux if that's your poison. That's not the aim of the announcement though.
- davidw 3y agoIt's my point though: rather than navigate between what RH is doing and what Oracle is doing, I'll just stick with a solid open source distribution. Lindy effect and all...
- midoridensha 3y agoExcept that Ubuntu isn't "solid" any more, not since they moved to those damn snaps. I'm looking at moving to openSUSE Tumbleweed now because I've had it with Ubuntu.
- lproven 3y agoThe first version of Ubuntu was 4.10 "Warty Warthog" in October 2004. I used Warty myself. But while Debian was around in 1997, Ubuntu was not.
- davidw 3y agoThat's correct. Ubuntu branched off of Debian at a certain point.
- lproven 3y agoYou miss my point. You can't have been using Ubuntu in 1997 because it didn't exist yet. I also would add a question: Debian in 1997 did not have automatic package dependency resolution yet, AIUI, because this was before APT. So, what made Debian worth using before APT?
