I recall reading that the large impactor theory was a major part of our magnetic field. Theia’s core became merged with ours, increasing both the strength and the longevity of our molten “dynamo”
- wheelerof4te 3y agoThere must have been some large impact in Earth's past. That huge asteroid belt field between Mars and Jupiter had to come from a planet collision. Who knows what else from Theia merged with proto-Earth.
- nickdothutton 3y agoThe core is larger than expected, which helps it maintain heat/phase, hence dynamo effect. It is assumed this is because there was a donor. Edited for typo.
- radicaldreamer 3y agoDoes the strength of the dynamo have a major impact on the emergence of life?
- breezeTrowel 3y agoI would assume so since a weak planetary magnetic field means that the atmosphere is much more easily stripped off over time via solar wind. Mars, having no magnetic field, is a good example of this.
