I’m really curious to see how situations like this with Open Source play out long term. Maintainers of popular libraries are asking for a little support from businesses that profit selling products and services built on top of a OSS library. In larger organizations, it’s difficult for individual contributors to influence a firm to donate time or resources to an OSS project. In my role it’s even difficult to incorporate a paid project or service into a project without layers of approval.
I have to imagine that many developers have little influence with these decisions. Many of these libraries were likely selected because they had a favorable OSS license and were “free”, meaning less organizational hurdles.
