So, is gaseous CO2 sequestration a bad idea, because it causes explosive volcanos, or a good idea, because volcanism causes global cooling?
- JumpCrisscross 3y ago> is gaseous CO2 sequestration a bad idea, because it causes explosive volcanos The paper [1] found "oceanic intraplate mafic eruptions are sustained from the mantle by high volatile concentrations inherited from their source and that deep CO2 exsolution (here up to ~800 MPa) drives their ascent and explosivity" [1]. 800 MPa occurs in the upper mantle, around 30 km below the Earth's surface [2]. (CO2 is being discussed for sequestration around 73 atm [4], or about 8 MPa, at depths that might approach 3 km.) So yes, if we start pumping CO2 into the ocean floor at almost triple the depth of the deepest borehole we've ever dug [3], and then superpressurize it, it could create a problem. - jychang 3y ago> up to 800 MPa The words “up to” would imply lesser pressures would work.
- JumpCrisscross 3y agoEsolution means gasification. Of course lower pressures work. If the CO2 is already gas, it isn’t explosive; the phase transition is. If you aren’t injecting hyperpressurised CO2 near the mantle, this is a total red herring.
