The RTO policy have a purpose: keeping up a dumb but profitable for some economy of services. Not really different than the old soviet adage, today dig a hole, tomorrow fill it so you have a job...
Offices means bars/restaurants/ready-made food delivery/cleaning services/rents and so on in cities. Means the base needed to head to a 2030 where "you'll own nothing" because anything is a service of someone else.
This is clear, what's not clear is the fact that such model is untenable. In an era of abundance we can keep money flowing with bullshit jobs, in an era of scarcity we can't.
Long-story short:
- most people will resist with any means because WFH means much to them
- most service economy will collapse anyway
- the disaster made in the meantime will push much more poor in cities, creating a bigger disaster thereafter.
Some I've no doubt think they can also profit from it...
