The Anti-California: How Montana performed a housing miracle
- jseliger 3y agoInstead of a miracle, Montana just legalized building more housing. Any state can do it.

- sense_of_wonder 3y agoI’m a lifelong resident, have worked in the housing policy area here, know people on the Governor’s committee who made recommendations that were adopted, etc. This headline is pure clickbait (probably from yet another journalist who wanted to vacation here and make a story out of it lol). There’s no “miracle” and nothing has been fixed. This idea that supply is the be-all-end-all to housing prices (and therefore less regulation always = lower prices), especially here, is super flawed. Our problem is the classic American one: everybody wants to make money on real estate. In this case, locals happy to sell to higher income out-of-state buyers and major outside capital driving up prices. You can’t build enough to undo these dynamics, and it’s a crude tool anyway in more fragile ecosystems where land use is such a concern.
