Australia’s national broadcaster shuts down almost all accounts on Elon Musk’s X
- ggm 3y agoThey probably should never have started. The belief social engagement with journalists was going to "help" the public broadcaster was flawed. The ABC is the third big public service broadcaster to remove itself from Twitter, following NPR and PBS in April. They left Twitter after Musk branded them “state media”.
- superchroma 3y agoIt helps with discovery. Arguably they could just move to locking the comments on all posts about articles.
- ggm 3y agoThe article discusses presenter mental health quite a lot. Discovery would be pretty partial if they did readonly, they kind of needed input/feedback to shop the "is this interesting" and "what haven't we considered" angles. Problem is the cost of moderation I think: it just moves who has the mental health problem around, it never goes away. There's a pretty vile undercurrent in the socials. Major league trolling, down personal. "we know where you live" is bad enough in my opinion.
- superchroma 3y agoI kind of disagree, you have engagement statistics on twitter; you're not exactly flying blind. The comments really aren't adding so much in my opinion. Arguably by vacating twitter entirely you have zero feedback which is worse? Just about every news provider in Australia has locked or removed their comment sections and it seems like that's necessary. Rupert Murdoch's outlets have comments open only on uncontroversial articles, and open for a short amount of time only. I don't see the point.
