It's not an unpopular opinion! Perhaps ironically, it is for the package management that software distributions provide (Debian, Fedora etc.) where GOPATH is most used - the Go modules system interferes with the guarantees that those distributions make about the builds, whereas GOPATH lets the distributions calculate dependencies themselves.
