structured logging has been a thing for a long time, so I don’t really buy this argument. the problem with monitoring and alerting derived from logs is that log ingestion pipelines usually have the property that when they get saturated, they get behind in time and catch up later. That’s more or less the opposite of what you want for an alerting pipeline.
