Spoiler:
> Researchers, including those from Cambridge University Hospitals in the UK, discovered a novel species of the bacterium Globicatella that caused “extensive soft tissue infection” in the man bitten by the cat... the new bacterium belonged to a genus of gram-positive bacteria called Globicatella that differs from related strains
- rex_lupi 3y ago>Globicatella Wonder if they discovered the genus from a certain cat named Globi
- lm28469 3y agoMore likely: globi -> globo -> globus -> round
- thaumasiotes 3y agoIt turns out that it's convenient to look this up! https://lpsn.dsmz.de/genus/globicatella https://lpsn.dsmz.de/genus/globicatella > Etymology: Glo.bi.ca.tel.la. L. masc. n. globus, a ball, sphere, globe; L. fem. dim. n. catella, a small chain; N.L. [neo-Latin] fem. dim. n. Globicatella, a short chain made up of spheres catella is the diminutive form of catena, "chain", which survives in the word "concatenate".
- toyg 3y ago> catena, "chain", which survives in the word "concatenate". Survives also in the actual italian word "catena", i.e. chain :) typically used these days for bike/motor transmission chains. We wouldn't use "catella" as a diminutive though, but rather "catenina" or "catenella".
