I somewhat recently got my drivers license and was taught to never grip the steering wheel with my thumbs on the inside because, and I quote my government certified instructor, "The airbag will rip your thumbs clean off." No clue if that's true, but it doesn't seem entirely unlikely so my thumbs don't go inside the wheel.
