This project builds a global identity database even if the crypto part disappears. Their tokenomics are a mess and their CEO openly admitted to market manipulation recently. Good on Kenya for shutting this down, I hope many more follow.
- 93po 3y agoIt doesn't create or track identities. It creates a unique hash of your iris and can only use it to determine if your iris has been scanned before. Nothing else.
- choppaface 3y agoAnd Loopt was originally about just sharing your location privately and then oops that got sold for low income credit card targeting so that sama could cash out https://allthingsd.com/20120309/green-dot-buys-location-app-loopt-for-43-4m/ https://allthingsd.com/20120309/green-dot-buys-location-app-...
- 93po 3y agoOrbs will be open sourced and audited. Long-term they aren't storing anything other than the iris hash.
- dopidopHN 3y agoYou can opt in for storage of the iris image itself to ensure that further modification of the hash algorithm do not force you to re-scan you eye.
- choppaface 3y agoBut then your actual biometrics can get taken by the government, as illustrated in OP raid on warehouses. Or Worldcoin leadership could use your biometrics for whatever they want e.g. stalking as done at Uber or forking their coin to fund a new ICO.
- dopidopHN 3y agoOh absolutely. It sounds disingenuous from them to say they only store hash and also push to store the actual full capture.
- TRiG_Ireland 3y agoYou seem to have a lot of faith in the promises made by crypto bros. I don't have that faith.
- BLanen 3y agoBiometrics as private keys are an absolutely horrible idea as it is. Proposing to use that private key as your one true interface to the digital financial world is ever more insane. The idea that proprietary technology and information(the scanners, software and everything that the organization owns) can somehow make this safe and secure is evil.
- tim333 3y agoThey don't do that "private keys are randomly generated, completely independent of any biometric information, and each other." from their docs
- afiori 3y agobut aren't they using biometrics as passwords to access those private keys? or at least to manage them (create new ones and/or revoke older ones)?
- monetus 3y agoI've not been paying attention to altman - what did he say about market manipulation? Having trouble searching for it.
- throwaway1777 3y agoAltman is not the ceo of worldcoin…
- OnlineGladiator 3y ago> Altman is not the ceo of worldcoin… I'm just curious who you think the CEO is?
- arcticbull 3y agoAltman and Blania started it together, and while Altman isn't uninvolved he has at minimum taken something of a step back AFAIK. As the peer comment says, formally though, Alex Blania is their CEO.
- ugh123 3y agoAlex Blania
- hyperfuturism 3y agoThe other comment is right, that Sam Altman is not the CEO. The CEO is Alex Blania. And he did say that they were dampening the volatility of the price for WLD (together with the help of market makers, etc. I would guess?).
- monetus 3y agoThanks, that must be what the op was referencing; and also thanks for affirming the sibling comment. The tools for humanity and the worldcoin foundation sites don't have much info on them from what I can tell. I wonder at how they go about preventing volatility and how they eventually plan on doing that in US. Sounds dodgy if they are avoiding our jurisdiction.
