What I don't understand is where there seem to be two versions of google maps. Sometimes I can get streetview, but if I access it about half the time I can't.

I feel there are a number of "modes", or, I don't know, "levels" maybe, that offer different features and are not intuitive (for me). I think a long time ago, you were either on the map, or you were in navigation, or you were in Street View. But now I get the impression that there's steps in between, like: you have maybe soft-selected a route, but you're not quite in navigation mode, yet you're unable to drop a pin somewhere else, so you have to go back without knowing how many steps exactly, that sort of funny business.

There are two web versions of Google Maps. There's the horrible one that you can reach from the search results page if you made a specifically commercial-local request, like [1]. There is the same thing on proper Google Maps[2]. 1: https://www.google.com/search?sa=X&tbs=lf:1,lf_ui:9&tbm=lcl&sxsrf=AB5stBhx0Pd6kafEwQWwUWBS28-YrhVbmg:1691383757505&q=lunch+in+downtown+berkeley&rflfq=1&num=10&ved=2ahUKEwiu2K3A38mAAxWHADQIHVnpDKIQjGp6BAgaEAE&biw=1237&bih=970&dpr=2#rlfi=hd:;si:;mv:[[37.8736323,-122.265715],[37.865785599999995,-122.273235]];tbs:lrf:!1m4!1u3!2m2!3m1!1e1!1m4!1u5!2m2!5m1!1sgcid_3american_1restaurant!1m4!1u5!2m2!5m1!1sgcid_3seafood_1restaurant!1m4!1u2!2m2!2m1!1e1!1m4!1u1!2m2!1m1!1e1!1m4!1u1!2m2!1m1!1e2!1m4!1u22!2m2!21m1!1e1!2m1!1e2!2m1!1e5!2m1!1e1!2m1!1e3!3sCgIIASABKgJVUw,lf:1,lf_ui:9 https://www.google.com/search?sa=X&tbs=lf:1,lf_ui:9&tbm=lcl&... 2: https://www.google.com/maps/search/lunch+downtown+berkeley/@37.8697089,-122.2720553,17z/data=!3m1!4b1?entry=ttu https://www.google.com/maps/search/lunch+downtown+berkeley/@...

Every time I encounter the first version I'm dumbfounded that it still exists. Its nerfed features make for such a frustrating user experience. I can't think of a reason for it to exist as its own thing. I'd love to know the rationale.

I believe the reason is it loads faster.

As so oftrn it's legal. For snti-competition reasons Google is not allowed to hotline Google Maps as first result on the search page.
