There was a documentary about this: https://www.pbs.org/speak/ https://www.pbs.org/speak/ Interestingly, I've noticed the decline in {low,in}land south accents in Texas gradually over that past ~20 years. It was much more pronounced, but now mostly only elderly people speak with this accent. PS: My mom would come back with a southern accent for a month or 2 when she visited family. She lives here full time now and has only a mild accent, if any.
