Ai.com Now Belongs to Elon Musk
- joshstrange 3y agoWell that’s it, pack it up boys, the AI wars are over and Elon won. Just like the owner of pets.com owns pet food shipping and I buy all my TVs from tv.com and let’s not forget how everyone buys their computers from computer.com. It really goes to show how owning a generic domain names leads to you owning the market for that term. /s I honestly can’t think of a bigger non-story. Who gives a shit about ai.com? In another thread about this I saw people praising this move as some kind of genius 4D chess idea. That it used to redirect to ChatGPT and now it goes to some silly xAI venture of Musk’s was some huge bait and switch. If you were _seriously_ affected by that change I don’t think you belong on this website, “that’s how I got to ChatGPT and now it’s changed”, seriously? Are bookmarks black magic to you? Have you never pinned a tab? Do you clear your history every 5 minutes such that typing “ch” doesn’t autocomplete to “chat.openai.com”? Domain names do not matter, they just don’t. Acquiring certain domain names for millions of dollars after your company is successful (going from “getY.com” or “Yapp.com” to “Y.com”) is mostly a vanity project for execs than it is a smart business decision. Heck, Steam is the leader in computer gaming sales and doesn’t own steam.com (they use steampowered.com), they’re doing just fine. In the age of search engines no one cares what your domain is.
