- bashinator 3y agoIMO you can have fictional science without going into the fantasy realm, simply by keeping it consistent with our current understanding of the Universe. Alistair Reynolds has written some truly epic space opera that completely omits FTL travel, much to the benefit of the story.
- golol 3y agoYea I'm being a bit cheeky. I just want to push back a bit against hard sci-fi. It can be really interesting to come up with new science as opposed to just coming up with new engineering given known science. Greg Egan books made me realize that.
- SideburnsOfDoom 3y agoSee also: Technothriller (1) which is on the edge between thriller and sci-fi - e.g. An action movie with a computer virus bouncing off satellites to hack a moon mission could have little or no "fictional science". James Bond in "Moonraker" 1979 fits this category. 1) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Techno-thriller https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Techno-thriller
