Oh dear. This refers to both the Gartner hype cycle _and_ the TIOBE index. Still, the premise is interesting. However, I doubt that languages have the largest effect on maintainability. It is more likely a bad team setting, tight deadlines, lack of funding, odd customer requirements, and dozens of other factors that turn a codebase into a terrible mess.
