I moved from NYC to Phoenix for this reason; in 2020, my apartment cost about 50% as much as the NYC one on a per-square-foot basis; today it's probably 40% as much. That cost differential is obviously tremendous, and it's before factoring in lower taxes. I'd prefer to live in NYC or LA, all else being equal, but cost is not equal.
