Read a diplomatic dispatch sent by the Romanian ambassador in Athens sometime around 1941-42, maybe 1943, where the Romanian government was informed that Turkey didn’t want to get involved in the war (presumably on the Germans’ side) because Istanbul would have been burned to the ground via aerial bombardments. Back then Istanbul was made up mostly of wood-based buildings.
