I wouldn't call it manipulation per se. I would frame it as "The Overton Window has moved and we have new socially acceptable talking points." Talking points are never The Truth, The Whole Truth and Nothing But The Truth. More nuanced discussion is not readily well-accepted and embraced in large groups -- like, say, the internet.
