No. Right wingers wrap themselves up in religious fundamentalism, it’s their stated goal. Not the left. You could disagree with how San Francisco handles math education (I certainly do), but don’t blame religious fundamentalism.
- noduerme 3y agoI used to think the causes and clothing of the left were more founded in humanism and logic than the senseless barbarian reactionary religion of the right, and I think they actually were until around the advent of social media when adopting leftist positions required you to think through problems before you were allowed to join groups for vanity (certain 60s vanity-left organizations aside). Now it appears to me just as much an organized religion as anything on the right. Both are doomsday cults full of mostly incoherent followers who can't articulate their basic positions, but are willing to die for them, having nothing much to live for.
- nielsbot 3y agoI literally meant fundamentalists. God is a Christian nation. Gays are the devil. Jews are evil. The sanctity of life. Leading to abortion bans, book bans, education and laws modeled on religious laws. That’s the core of the american right. And it’s being exploited by capitalists. That said capitalism is a near religion in the US and “runs things” for both the left and right in the government. As for your comment—I think you’re conflating tribalism especially as enabled on social media with actual religion.
- noduerme 3y agoYeah, those religious fundamentalist ideologies have no place in a modern, civilized society. My issue with the Progressive "tribe" is that it looks at the other tribes, concludes to some degree correctly that they're a bunch of illiterate fascists, and then declares that anti-capitalist economic leveling and socialist reeducation are the only possible cure. Their small-d democratic credentials are hardly better than those of the guy with the horns. It's been about 15 years of social media, and it's hard not to take it as a gauge of true political sentiment at this point. There aren't a lot of other outlets where we get to hear what people are thinking. But I do go to a lot of bars, both in deep red Oregon country and in ultra-blue Portland, and I'm not actually on social media, so I'm basing this off what I hear from people in person over a drink, not stuff I read on X/Twitter. Simply put: In PDX, I own two cars, I'm evil. In Salem, I'm a Jewish liberal, I'm evil. I've come to the conclusion that they're all idiots.
