When you face a risk with your head up high and you make it through, you'll be looking at a much brighter future compared to those who were hiding scared to death or were kicking the can down the road. In this case it applies to COVID but it's true for monetary policy, antibiotics resistence etc. Nature demands a tribute in the form of the weak and inadequates , it rewards societies which offer such tribute and punish the societies which refuse to do it.
