That's just how GSM is. Keep in mind that back in the day, your device attached to the modem might not have been very smart or interactive. The service center has the ability to CRUD everything on the modem via AT commands. Your keyword is AT+CMGD Things are probably more complex on modern smartphones but I had to learn all this crap for an arduino project.
