Twitter's Blue Ticks are now so toxic that paid users can choose to hide them
- mindcrime 3y agoThe feature was put into place not only to make money, but to satisfy those who wanted status on Twitter without having to earn it. This betrays a complete misunderstanding of the whole idea of blue check marks. They were never (supposed to be) about "status", they were about "verification". In other words, the notion that you are actually who you say you are. If it turned into a marker of "this person is a celebrity or 'someone very important'" that was a mistake that should never have happened. Now to be fair, the modern "Twitter Blue (sorry, "X Blue"?) feature is a bit of a lie as well, in that they don't do a whole lot of "verification" so far as I can tell. It does at least require you to have, and link to your account, a valid credit / debit card or whatever, which may at least prevent some low effort spam profiles. But it would have been better if they'd implemented something a little bit more rigorous.
