I'm nearsighted, and I have astigmatism. I've noticed that when I close one eye and look at something like a clock on the wall, each eye produces a differently distorted image. Each eye is a bit different. But when I look at the clock with both eyes, the image is much sharper, and better than either eye alone. The article's scenario of 1,000 ship passengers reporting their individual GPS coordinates reminded me of this phenomenon.
I bet that brains use clever algorithms like Kalman filters extensively.
- bhattid 3y agoIf you're interested in the term, what you noticed with your eyesight is an example of hyperacuity. Coincidentally, I learned about it making the same observation with my own eyes. :)
