Because it was a hostile company from the start. It's basically destroyed any local alternatives by dumping prices, but that doesn't make profit.

Like seriously, I understand some of the participants on HN are too young to have personally experienced that industry first hand, but it was baaaaaad. If you think Uber right now is bad, you would have hated cabs.
