The Web Is Imploding
- 8chanAnon 3y agoThe article concludes with an unfinished thought: The future of the web should be rooted in a personal ownership of one's data. Yeah, okay. How does that equate with "the web is imploding"? It's not imploding. The Internet started as a free-for-all and now fiefdoms are being built because freedom of opinion (not necessarily the same as freedom of speech) is under attack. Should the proper response be to retreat to a bubble of your own creation? I dunno. One thing is for sure: we need to stop behaving as if the Internet is an alternative to living in the real world.
- anihil 3y agoAuthor of the article here, thanks for the feedback. I do agree that there's to be more written about it but I see it as a work in progress. Though the internet is not the real world (the vitriol of the online I rarely witness it offline) it is the connection to real world events for most of us and the way the access to information is being walled off, I feel people will be robbed off valuable information sources that earlier generations have been privy to. I don't know if building our own bubbles is an answer, atleast there's a guarantee that it won't be taken down by a middleman.
