Disney Confirms Fears, Officially Getting Rid of Marvel Physical Media
- ajdude 3y agoI know this isn't typical HN type news, but to me this feels like the true beginning of the end for physical media. I have always loved having the physical movies in the best quality that I can receive, VHS, laserdisc, DVD, Blu-ray, and these days 4K blue rays. I still stand that watching a movie in 4K from the UHD disc appears better quality than what I see on streaming. And at the end of the day, if the streaming service decides to pull the movie, I still own a physical copy of it. I have so many laserdiscs and DVDs that just aren't available anywhere.
- PaulHoule 3y agoIt’s a great time to be a pirate. It seems silly to me, some people will pay a lot for steelbox editions, more than three months of a streaming service, seems the studio should take their money.
- 8chanAnon 3y ago>It’s a great time to be a pirate. Unfortunately, that seems to be the case. The goal is for the masses to own nothing and be happy. The answer is black markets. If Disney won't print the DVDs then somebody else will (with Disney being the loser). The future is bright, lol.
- aurizon 3y agoWith this, every stream to every person can have a unique identifier embedded, like they do with the published papers, so they know the exact person whose account a paper was sent to Sci-Hub or whose stream was torrented. Just another example of the 'length', 'breadth' and 'depth' of DRM. 2 identicals might be compared to find it, but 100,000,000 differents can be scattered within - which one is the one they refer to, so you can remove it. In theory each one can be sieved and subtly changed, but they have others in there - change all? and they are made to resemble data - what bit of 'snow' that flashes once is the true 'bit' if one color bit is changed by 1 and is not visible. Not sure if this can be interpreted as a privacy invasion - older judges, who have not yet articled, will mull this in the future. This first started with CIA's use of micro kerning in word documents to flag who linked what document. And this will all be paid for by the savings on physical media.
