Latest update: the diamagnetism has been confirmed from a tiny LK-99 replica sample. The Author posted:
> Under the guidance of Professor Haixin Chang, postdoctor Hao Wu and PhD student Li Yang from the School of Materials Science and Technology of Huazhong University of Science and Technology successfully for the first time verified the LK-99 crystal that can be magnetically levitated with larger levitated angle than Sukbae Lee‘s sample at room temperature. It is expected to realize the true potential of room temperature, non-contact superconducting magnetic levitation.
Update: second video showing it's not paramagnetic

- anotheryou 3y agolove the atomic full screen button on the video player XD
- smcameron 3y agoBetter than the WWII era German aircraft insignia youtube uses for the "unfullscreen" button.
- mcpackieh 3y agoDon't look up the Bundeswehr, I'm not sure you could handle the shock.
- xdennis 3y agoHa, it really does look like the Balkenkreuz[1]. Although it was in use before Hitler and it's just a cross. [1]: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balkenkreuz https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balkenkreuz
- smcameron 3y agoThanks, I knew there had to be a name for that thing, now I know what it is.

- est 3y agoThey are baking the third batch, hopefully get some samples big enough for testing resistance this time.
- v3ss0n 3y agoLooks legit to me. Thing gonna change alot
- junofan 3y agoManifold pumping. We’re back.
- psychoslave 3y agoAutomatic subtitled translation is "furiously" laughable. :)
- saberdancer 3y agoYes, it is obviously not very accurate (sample is not in a rage :)) but I'm sure many are excited about the possibilities and don't know Chinese (Mandarin?).
- yellowcake0 3y agoI don't think he claims it's levitating does he? It's just standing up on its end I think.
- ProtoAES256 3y agoHe repeatedly stated that the sample stands up(become straight) when the object is nearing it, and drop down when its far. The same applies for the negative polarity(same behaviour on N/S). Source: Native Mandarin speaker.
- joefigura 3y agoOoh, please share pre-prints if and when anyone sees one for this group
- xattt 3y agoTime to invest in lead futures?
- volkadav 3y agoMaybe there'll finally be a strong economic driver for ripping out all the old lead plumbing around the world, heh. Watch how quick Flint, MI gets their stuff updated if someone can make a buck on the old pipes!
- xattt 3y agoAnecdotally, a DIY switchover from copper to PEX is also an income earner.
- Tade0 3y agoOr buy car batteries while they're still affordable. Lead is less abundant in the Earth's crust than cobalt or neodymium, or even lanthanum.
- prpl 3y agothat really doesn’t mean anything. For one, it’s easy to find and mine lead. Been doing it for millennia
- King-Aaron 3y agoI might have to go collect all the ones I've thrown in the ocean over the years
- vixen99 3y agoI presume you're joking else you probably should - as an act of propitiation for your sins. - jiggawatts 3y agoDoesn't anyone working in the physical sciences know how to record a decent video that isn't shaky, blurry, out-of-focus, or a handheld mobile phone recording of a computer screen? He's using a digital microsocope! Just press the "record" button and upload that! I can't wait for someone to successfully reproduce it, use a polaroid camera to take the photo, print it out, fax it, and have someone scan in the photocopy, take a photo of the scan from their screen, and upload it to a social media website that'll recompress it and put a watermark on it. Nobel prize winning stuff, right there. https://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/digital_data_2x.png https://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/digital_data_2x.png PS: No, the sample does NOT "levitate". From what little I could see form the shaky and blurry video, it just moves around, like any magnetic substance would. It could be a piece of rusty iron that flaked off something else, for all we know.
- junofan 3y agoRe PS: What’s gonna convince you?
- King-Aaron 3y agoWhat do they say, extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. This is extremely ordinary 'evidence'
- junofan 3y agoThe claim is that the material in the video is the result of a replication attempt by the team at HUST and not something else, like an iron flake. This is their second attempt. Their first attempt failed. They’ve been posting about it all week.
- maxbond 3y ago> This is extremely ordinary 'evidence' Claims don't require special evidence whether they are extraordinary or not. "Extraordinary" claims can be proved with the same kind of evidence as other kinds of claims. Relativity was first tested by taking pictures of an eclipse, pretty pedestrian evidence relative to the cosmic scale of it's implications. What is true is that, the higher the confidence of your prior belief, the less impact new evidence will have. So extraordinary claims simply require more evidence, because our prior is that they aren't true with fairly high confidence.
- geuis 3y agoHow anyone can see anything in the video is beyond me. Just dozens of comments literally flying across the video.
- Filligree 3y agoThey probably turn off the comments.
- codedokode 3y agoThis style of displaying comments looks pretty funny.
- TreeDiagramIRC 3y agoThese are a type of comments named "danmaku" (弹幕), originated from a Japanese video site Niconico. Under the player there's a button appearing as a TV icon with a 弹 character in it; click the button to toggle these comments.
- irthomasthomas 3y agoJudging by the quality of the video, this LK-99 could just be the best nerd-trawling operation of the decade.
