Huge breakthrough.
Energy efficiency is just one gain. This also potentially unlocks major gains in quantum computing, fusion energy, tradition computer chip design allowing another 30 years of moore’s law, batteries with zero energy loss leading to ultra dense batteries and electric aviation
- regularfry 3y agoUnfortunately the problem with electric aviation isn't the storage tech. Although having superconductors around would make the ground infrastructure nicer, if the current density limit works out.
- castis 3y agoWhats the problem with electric aviation?
- drexlspivey 3y agoBatteries are much heavier than fuel
- regularfry 3y agoThat's part of the problem, as is the fact that batteries don't get lighter through the flight. The energy infrastructure on the ground is the thorny bit, though.
- regularfry 3y agoGetting enough energy into enough planes fast enough at enough airports to make a dent. As a guide to the order of magnitude of the problem, consider that a 747 needs roughly 100MW to stay airborne.
- delfinom 3y agoWe'll have only part of that because this is lead based. Lead free regulation is the law of the land in many places and it's getting tighter. We spent decades finding out how absolutely harmful lead is to humans. Only the industrial sector could claim exceptions but would still need to comply with safe cleanup and disposal.
