I'd advise against Namecheap (as a former many year customer) as they decided a while back to start taking a political stance as a business; they terminated existing customers, with no notice, because they disagreed with political actions of the customer's home country. Whatever country you live in could so something in the future they don't like and they'll just drop you, can't rely on them to act as a business.
- rewmie 3y ago> (...) they decided a while back to start taking a political stance as a business; they terminated existing customers, with no notice, because they disagreed with political actions of the customer's home country. Can you provide any concrete evidence that supports your personal assertion?
- rf15 3y agoWhile I cannot offer concrete evidence, it's fairly easy to see that this could happen for Russian nationals or similar.
- rewmie 3y ago> While I cannot offer concrete evidence (...) Because it doesn't exist, and you're making stuff up.
- notahacker 3y agoThis is a euphemistic way of describing what happened when the customer's home country started the "political action" of bombing cities Namecheap staff were based in. HN discussion including contributions from the Namecheap CEO is here https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=30504812 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=30504812
- mkl 3y agoThis is quite a misleading comment. They gave notice: "Existing users were given a one-week grace period to move their domains.[12] The next day, the deadline was extended by another 2 weeks." It is not a general political policy but a reaction against one nation that is literally threatening their employees' lives: "Namecheap at the same time said it had over 1,000 employees located in Ukraine, comprising most of its support staff mostly in Kharkiv". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Namecheap#Advocacy https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Namecheap#Advocacy
- ipaddr 3y agoA week or two before deleting is not really peace of mind for an average person who may not have gotten the email (no letters were mailed). Punishing unrelated groups of people including women and minorities was a political statement not an operational issue. Deleting customers domains did not make anyone safer.
- retrocryptid 3y agoIt's horrible when companies choose to exert their agency.
- woofcat 3y agoHow to say your a Russian national without saying your a Russian national.
- et-al 3y agoOr they could just be a reasonable person sympathetic to the plight of ordinary Russians who don't really have any influence on Putin's government.
- Larrikin 3y agoDo you also advocate for protests that only the protestors see that affect no one but the protestor's day?
- ipaddr 3y agoDo you see both sides of this issue?
- notahacker 3y agoIrrespective of nationality I'm not sure a reasonable person would trivialise the invasion of the country the majority of Namecheap staff were based in as "political action...they don't like".
- beeburrt 3y agoThat's good to know. I'll stop using them.
- monkeydreams 3y ago> Whatever country you live in could so something in the future they don't like When Australia invades a close neighbour and commits war-crimes against the civilian population, I will happily accept the closing of my Namecheap account.
- Takennickname 3y agoNo you wouldn't. You just say that because you think Australia won't do it. As soon as Australia does it you'll have a million reasons for why "It's Different™"
- ipaddr 3y agoAustralia doesn't have any close neighbours they are literally an island
- southernplaces7 3y agoSo you think it's perfectly okay for a company to punish people for the criminal acts of their national government? I wouldn't expect such jingoistic garbage from commentators on s site like this. Also, I doubt you would accept if it was applied to you for being Australian. You claim differently, but likely you would complain, perhaps here, about how unfair and unjustified it was, which is reasonable. Unreasonable is being condescending to such a valid complaint from others because you're not in their shoes and it's easy to deride them for being some "other".
