      Go to Amazon and look for "Mini PC" and you will find sub $150 hardware. As for software, you have Gimp and Blender as examples of software that far exceed the capabilities of what SGI had in the 90s.

        I wouldn’t be surprised if Photoshop 3/4 and Maya 1.X still have a few advantages over floss alternatives, such as CMYK color. Also, the desktop Octane was tens of thousands not hundreds of. However the freedom is priceless.
